Immersive Experiences

M+ Museum

Breaking cultural and language barriers for dialogue across timeless issues through the lens of art.

By introducing a new means of viewing art, our Experiences design team leveled the field in art interpretation by providing simple prompts available bilingually to help visitors view art in a personal way.

The Cabinet, an immersive exhibit within the M+ Museum, featured a complex mechanical arm structure and a bespoke, complementary tablet-driven application, allowing visitors to file through a "cabinet" of art pieces.

Designing, engineering, and installing a museum-grade experience across continents is already complex. Doing so entirely remotely during a global shutdown added a new level of challenge. Despite the distance, The Cabinet was completed and delivered on time, becoming a key part of the museum’s interactive offering.

From prototyping to final assembly, every element was crafted in New York and delivered to Hong Kong, with installation coordinated virtually in collaboration with M+ Museum staff and on-site fabricators.
The central design challenge was to invite inclusive, non-intimidating engagement with contemporary art—without prescribing what a visitor should think or feel.

To meet this, the team grounded the interaction model in Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS): a research-based educational approach that uses open-ended questions to foster group discussion and interpretation of visual art.

This methodology shaped both the content prompts and the tablet interface.
The Cabinet exemplifies how design and technology can transcend language and distance to create meaningful, inclusive dialogue through art—proving that creativity knows no borders.
